What a book! On Chesil Beach story relates the story, in painful detail, about the wedding night of a rather "proper" English couple. This is not a cheerful book, and things go very badly. It's fascinating to get inside the heads of both characters, and Ian McEwan does a remarkable, striking job. In this case, fiction seems to transcend reality. McEwan is also the author of the novel, now film, Atonement, and he is a superb writer.
I had the same reaction. I wanted to shout out, "No! Just tell her!"(or him!) I've read some pop psychology books and this novel has more truth than any of them.

What a coincidence -- I just started reading On Chesil Beach last night at bed time and had intended on reading just a little bit to get started. (I was exhausted, had been a long day.) Well, I couldn't put it down, and an hour later I finally forced myself to get some rest. I can tell it's going to be a sad ending, but wow, how deeply I feel for these characters. I just wish I could reach through the pages and shake the two of them.....
